A prison bus carrying 15 people fell off a icy highway overpass and crashed into a freight train in West Texas, killing 10 people and injuring five, a Penwell, Texas sheriff told the Associated Press.
The bus, which was traveling from Abilene to El Paso, was carrying 12 inmates and three correctional officers. Eight inmates and two corrections were killed in the crash
A spokesperson from the Medical Center Hospital in Odessa said that they are treating five patients. In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice confirmed the 10 deaths, adding that four prisoners and one corrections officer were injured.
"It's with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of those killed and injured this morning in a tragic accident," said Brad Livingston, executive director of the Department of Criminal Justice. "Their loved ones will be in our thoughts and prayers."
"It's as bad as you can imagine," Odessa Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Kavin Tinney told the Odessa American newspaper. "In 32 years it's as bad as anything I've seen."
