A 15-year-old Japanese girl, who has not been identified because she is a minor, was arrested Sunday by police in Sasebo city in Southern Japan for murdering Aiwa Matsuo, who is also 15.

On Saturday she allegedly beat her high school classmate with a metal instrument, then strangled her to death. After the victim was dead, she cut off her head and one of her hands.

"I did it all by myself," the girl reportedly said.

Matsuo's family said she had said she was going to meet friends, but when she didn't return they called the police.

The body of the victim was found in the suspect's apartment, which she lived in by herself. It was reported after her mother died last year, her father remarried and moved elsewhere in the city.

In 2004, Japan was rocked by a similar case, known as the Sasebo slashing, where an 11-year-old girl killed her 12-year-old classmate for making comments about her appearance in an online chatroom. The girl used a knife to slash her throat and arms.
