Man Hit And Killed By Crashing Plane Hours After Posting Touching Anniversary Message To His Wife On Facebook

“I am very happy and can’t wait to see what the next 100 have in store for us.”


Ommy Irizarry, a 36-year-old man from Puerto Rico, was killed on Sunday by a small plane that crash-landed on a beach in Venice, Fla., Associated Press reported.

The pilot of the 1972 Piper Cherokee was having trouble with the plane and made a distress call to Venice Municipal Airport at 2:45 p.m shortly before crash-landing on Caspersen Beach. A woman from the airport informed officials that the pilot would not be able to make it to the airport and planned to land on the beach.


The pilot, Karl Kokomoor, 57, and his passenger, David Theen, 60, were not injured. Irizarry's nine-year-old daughter was seriously injured by the plane.

Irizarry was celebrating his ninth wedding anniversary with his wife Rebecca and their children on the Florida Gulf Coast beach near Sarasota.

Irizarry and his daughter were walking on the beach when the plane crashed. He was killed at the scene while his daughter was critically injured by debris from the plane. She was airlifted to a children's hospital in St. Petersburg.

Hours before his death, Irizarry wrote about how much he loved his wife and thanked her for being with him for nine years. "(I) can't wait to see what the next 100 have in store for us," he said in a Facebook message.

Irizarry was an Army sergeant stationed in Georgia. A family friend told the Associated Press that he was a "great, hands-on father" to his three children. The family was scheduled to be stationed in Alaska.
