The 41st president of the United States was taken by ambulance to the Methodist Hospital in Houston on Tuesday. Spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement that the former president was transported "as a precaution" after experiencing shortness of breath earlier that evening.

Bush will be held at the hospital for observation, the statement said.

An update from Bush's office on Wednesday said that the former president "had a good day and his prognosis remains positive."

On Thursday, a third statement was released that said Bush would remain at the Houston Methodist Hospital for a third night.

The statement said he "had another terrific day and is in great spirits." The statement added that his wife, son Neil, and daughter-in-law Maria Bush, visited him on Christmas day and he "received well wishes from family, friends, and fellow citizens."

On Friday, Jim McGrath, Bush's spokesman tweeted that the former president "remains in high spirits and continues to make progress, but he will remain at the Houston Methodist Hospital this evening."

The former president and his wife, Barbara Bush, watched the Houston Texans football game Sunday from the hospital and sent their congratulations to coach Bill O'Brien for a winning season.

Sunday will mark Bush's sixth night at the hospital, and his spokesman said "we hope to have news about a possible discharge soon."

In 1991, Bush went to the hospital for health problems related to his irregular heartbeat. Doctors diagnosed the condition as Graves' disease, which is an autoimmune disorder that impacts the thyroid.

He again went to the hospital in February 2000 for a recurrence of the irregular heartbeat. He was released after one night.

Two years ago, Bush spent two months in Methodist Hospital in Houston for bronchitis and a chronic cough. The hospital discharged him in January 2013.

His family revealed publicly that he is no longer able to walk unassisted, which has been a great frustration for him, as he loved outdoor activities.

In June, he celebrated his 90th birthday by jumping out of a plane with a red, white, and blue parachute near his summer home in Maine.
