Lovato joins a slew of artists who've partnered with Google Play to release their albums for free, including Kanye West, Katy Perry, and DJ Mustard.

Perry recently made her 2013 album, Prism, available for free download via Google Play, while a limited number of copies of DJ Mustard's new album, 10 Summers, was available free of charge in August. Meanwhile Bob Marley's greatest hits album Legend, which was released in 1984, is finally hitting the top 10 of Billboard's 200 chart, thanks to a deal with Google Play selling the album discounted to just 99 cents. Late last year, the store also released Kanye West's Yeezus and Chvrches' The Bones of What You Believe for free for a week.

These promotions indicate that Google harbors ambitions to be a big player in music, also evidenced by its recent acquisition of Songza. Meanwhile, record labels are also looking to reach new fans with promotions, striking deals with coupon sites like Groupon and Living Social to boost album sales and sell concert tickets.

The free edition of the album will include a new studio version of Lovato's cover of Ed Sheeran's "Give Me Love," which she's been performing live in 2014.

"It's one of my favorite songs of all time," Lovato said of Sheeran's original. "It has a lot of meaning to me because when I was in Africa [for my birthday], I listened to it over and over, so that's when I really fell in love with it. Whenever I hear that song it reminds me of my experience [there]. I just love it so much.""
